What is a Long Distance Move?
With our moving company, we define it as a move outside the Fraser Valley that is up to 800 kms away and stays in BC.
Occasionally, we will do moves to Alberta, but our niche is to stay with BC so we can do the entire move in a 2 day process.
How Most Companies Do Long Distance Moves
A typical method for moving companies is to give an estimated price for your long distance move based on the weight. In that case, an estimator comes to your home and tells you what they THINK the weight/cost will be.
The cost of the move is 100% dependent on the actual weight of the items to be moved. So, you have an idea what the cost might be, but it depends on the skill of the estimator and if they are accurate in their assessment.
On your actual moving day, the truck that your items will go into goes over a scale and it’s empty weight is determined. Then, it comes to your home and loads all your items, and goes over the scale again. The difference in weight is the weight of your items and at that time your price is calculated and told to you.
So, you have no idea what the cost of your move will be until your items are already all on the moving truck. If you were told an estimated weight that is far lower than reality, you will be shocked by a much higher bill than you were expecting, but what can you do? Your items are already on the truck and you don’t really have any recourse.
This is the way that long distance moves are typically priced out. If it sounds fun, awesome! There are lots of shady companies that will do it that way for you.
Another common practice for long haul moves is to put your items into a semi trailer along with other people’s items. Doing this allows the moving company to be offer a typically lower price to their clients, but it does mean you don’t have a guaranteed arrival time at your new home. Those movers will need to wait until that trailer is completely full, so you may have a 1 week arrival window, and won’t know when your items will arrive until 1-2 days before they will be delivered.
Also, because they use a semi truck with a trailer, if you don’t have 100 feet of available space for the truck to park and be loaded, they will need to use a smaller truck and “shuttle” your items from your house, condo, townhouse to the larger truck. Doing this means all your items are being loaded and unloaded 1 extra time and dramatically increases the risk of damage, and will increase your moving costs as well. How We Do Long Distance Moves
At the time of your in-person quote, you will be told exactly what the cost is for your move. It will be a set price and will not be adjusted or changed in any way. You will never be surprised by the moving price for your move, whether it’s long distance, or local.
Even if there are terrible weather conditions that cause highways to be shut down, adding 12 hours of driving time (remember when the “atmospheric river” happened?), your price will be exactly what you were told at the time of the quote.
For your move, we load all your items into our 5 ton moving truck(s). Only your items will be in your load, so there is never another clients items in the truck. Because of the size of our trucks, we never have needed to get a shuttle truck to move items from your home, and thus we reduce potential double handling.
We give you a specified arrival time at your new home, so you know the exact date and timeline when your goods will arrive at your destination.
