Ensure Safety First: Before entering your home, confirm it’s safe. Turn off electricity and gas, and watch for structural damage or hidden hazards.
2. Document the Damage: Take photos and videos of the affected areas for your insurance claim. Keep a detailed inventory of damaged belongings. If the damage is covered by insurance, they will only repair your home to the condition it was before the flood, so the more evidence you have, the better.
3. Contact your insurance agent: they will hopefully connect you with the restoration company that will be doing the work of returning your home to it’s original state. If you’d like the contact info of a local Langley insurance agent, connect with my friend Jonathan. He owns Valiant Insurance, with an office in Fort Langley.
4. Start Cleanup: Remove standing water and dry out the area as quickly as possible.
Use fans, dehumidifiers, and professional services to prevent mold growth.
This will likely be what the restoration company will do when they arrive, but if they are not immediately at your home, you can possibly prevent further damage by getting it started.
5. Salvage Belongings: Separate salvageable items from those that need disposal. Fragile or sentimental items can often be saved with proper care.
6. Contact a moving company to move your items into storage as the repairs are happening.
Make sure they have appropriate insurance because the restoration company will require that of any movers you hire.
