Choose the Right Box: Choose sturdy, corrugated cardboard boxes in various sizes. Use new boxes if possible, as they provide better protection compared to used ones.
Wrap Each Item Individually: Wrap fragile items like glassware, ceramics, or electronics separately using packing paper. Fill empty spaces inside hollow items with paper or bubble wrap to prevent internal movement.
Fill the box completely full: You want the box to be full, so it does not get pressed down by another box on top of it. Full to the brim, but not overfull. Check out this picture that shows what happens when a box isn't completely full.
Cushioning is Key: Line the bottom of the box with crumpled paper or bubble wrap to create a cushioning layer. Place the heaviest items at the bottom and lighter ones on top.
Label the Box: Clearly mark the box as "Fragile" on all sides. This ensures that handlers are aware of its delicate contents and handle it with care. Be aware not to label every box as Fragile. Even when the best movers see that every box says Fragile, they can't put them all in a delicate place in the truck. Only mark Fragile the most delicate boxes, otherwise it's a bit of a "boy who cried wolf" situation.
Seal Boxes Securely: Use high-quality packing tape to securely seal all edges and seams of the box. Reinforce corners and seams to prevent accidental openings.
Pack Boxes Strategically: Avoid overpacking boxes with fragile items. Maintain a balance between providing adequate cushioning and not overcrowding the box, which could compromise its structural integrity.
Ensure items don't move: An easy way to test this is to shake the box from side to side. There should be no movement or sound. When the items are packed well and cushioned, you will not hear or feel the items moving in the box. It doesn't matter if it's local or long distance moving, if your boxes are packed like this they could be dropped from the truck onto the ground and they will be just fine.
By following these steps, you can significantly reduce the risk of damage to fragile items during transportation or storage. Taking the time to pack your delicate belongings properly will provide them with the necessary protection and ensure they arrive safely at their destination.
